Life doesn’t stop after paralysis. It rolls on.
Jesse Billauer was a world champion surfer. At the age of 17, he was listed as one of the top 100 junior surfers in the world and his skill was improving by the day. Then, on March 25, 1996, Jesse suffered a spinal cord injury when he was knocked headfirst into a sandbar after a wave threw him from his board. Surfing was his life and, now a quadriplegic, doctors were telling him he would never surf again.
Jesse refused to believe his life should be paralyzed just because his body now was. He adapted his technique and equipment, and through the support of many others, he returned to surfing and started Life Rolls On in 2013.
Life Rolls On is dedicated to improving the quality of life for people affected by spinal cord injuries. Through their many surf and skating events around the country, they are able to touch the lives of hundreds of thousands of individuals.
In 2014, BraunAbility partnered with Life Rolls On because we knew our missions were the same: we aimed to take away the burdens placed on a person with paralysis and give their freedom back by providing them a support group that valued their participation in their communities and their lives.
“To give them that one special moment. That moment where he doesn’t need to feel his legs.”
In 2015, Jesse won gold for Team USA, becoming the first World Champion of adaptive surfing. In 2016, he was named one of the seven most inspirational and influential surfers in the world. Jesse, like many of our customers, knew he would never drive a minivan: it just wasn’t his style. He was among the first individuals to own a BraunAbility MXV and now proudly advocates BraunAbility for giving him, and so many others like him, independence without sacrificing the “cool” factor he wanted.
