What is Spina Bifida?

Spina bifida is a birth defect. The spinal cord does not form and develop properly, causing physical limitations and problems. While spina bifida causes cannot be pinpointed, it is believed that a mixture of genetic and environmental causes can be the issue.

Symptoms of Spina Bifida

There is not a one-size-fits-all scenario for symptoms of Spina Bifida. Every individual can experience different things, but there are a few symptoms that are common and experienced among all patients.

Hydrocephalus

Hydrocephalus is when there is extra fluid in the brain. This causes there to be gaps in the child's brain. This can cause many brain issues and damage to the child, even head swelling.

In order to treat this, it needs to be monitored regularly. Doctors, by using a shunt, are able to drain the fluid from the brain and prevent damage. As the child grows older, the shunt may need to be replaced, which is why it is important to monitor it carefully.

Skin Conditions

Many babies with spina bifida experience intense skin conditions. This can involve sores and blisters on the lower body. Some people may also experience burns, which is why it is important to keep children away from strong heat and long-term sun exposure.

Physical Activity

One of the top symptoms of spina bifida is the physical effects and limitations it causes. Spina bifida causes limited mobility. This can make it difficult for kids to even walk and do daily tasks. They normally will need crutches or a wheelchair in order to move around from place to place.

Different individuals, however, may have more or less mobility than others. A physical therapist can work with the child to help increase mobility. They can also determine a plan to help them function normally.

Spina Bifida Awareness

Spina bifida affects thousands of children every year. Spina bifida Awareness Month is a time to celebrate those individuals that are affected by this disease. It gives a time for you to raise support and awareness in your community. While this is a raging disease, not many people understand it fully or are aware of its effects. This is why it's important to spread understanding about what spina bifida is and how others can support the community.

Support these individuals by taking the time to raise awareness in your community today.
