In May for National Mobility Awareness Month, the National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) used to have a Local Heroes contest. NMEDA described a local hero as being someone who volunteers, educates, advocates, achieves, and perseveres in their communities.

Whether living with a disability or advocating for those who do, the Local Heroes contest was a chance to show why you or someone you knew deserved a wheelchair accessible vehicle. Three were given away each year: one to a caregiver, one to a senior, and one to a general recipient. The contest continued to grow each year; in 2016 over one million people submitted and voted for their local hero.

In years past, BraunAbility donated a van to the competition. We were able to catch up with our recipients after the winners were announced; their amazing contributions to their communities and other’s lives are evident and admirable.
