Veterans Benefits Eligibility

At United Access, we proudly support our Veterans. We work closely with the Department of Veteran Affairs to best support you and your needs. United Access offers expertise in working with the VA on automotive grants for wheelchair accessible vehicles. We celebrate our customers and employees who are Veterans by supporting local events and volunteering with organizations that work to honor our Veterans.

The VA offers a program that includes a new wheelchair van for disabled veterans every two years to Veterans who are 100% Service Connected. The Veterans Administration offers a one-time automobile grant of $25,603.02 for that meet stringent guidelines. Veterans that trade their conversion vehicle every two years typically have less out-of-pocket expense getting into a new wheelchair van. Talk to your VA counselor or prosthetics doctor for more information on this opportunity.

AUTO Act Expands Veteran’s Affair (VA) Program for Disabled Veterans

Signed into law in early 2023, the Advancing Uniform Transportation Opportunities for Veterans (AUTO) Act is designed to assist disabled veterans in covering the expenses of necessary adaptations for their vehicles. These adaptations can include lifts, power steering, modified doors, wheelchair modifications, and more. Prior to the AUTO Act, the VA offered a one-time only grant for vehicle modifications, but now, veterans with service-connected disabilities can receive multiple grants throughout their lifetimes.

Thanks to bipartisan backing, the AUTO Act permits disabled veterans to request a VA automobile grant every 10 years from the Department of Veterans Affairs. There is a transition period in place: veterans who have utilized a VA vehicle grant before, but not within the last 30 years, qualify for another grant. Those who have not previously used the grant are eligible for a grant every 10 years following their initial one. The previous system did not provide funding for future vehicle purchases, leaving veterans responsible for covering the costs of subsequent upgrades or replacements themselves.

Veterans Affair 4502 Automobile Allowance

The 4502 Automobile Grant is a special benefit available to qualifying veterans who have a service-connected disability that limits their ability to drive. This grant can provide funds towards purchasing a vehicle specially modified to accommodate the veteran's disability. If you meet the eligibility criteria, this grant can help you regain your independence and improve your quality of life.

Veterans Affair 1394 Adaptive Equipment Grant

The 1394 Adaptive Equipment Grant is a valuable benefit available to eligible veterans who have a service-connected disability that impacts their ability to function independently. This grant provides financial assistance for the purchase of adaptive equipment such as wheelchair lifts, modified steering controls, and other devices that can help you navigate daily tasks with greater ease. By utilizing this grant, you can enhance your mobility, increase your independence, and improve your quality of life.

Serving Our Veteran Customers

“I have been a customer of United Access for many years now, and I cannot express how grateful I am for their incredible service. As a veteran, I have always appreciated their dedication to helping those who have served our country. Thanks to the VA Auto Grant, I have been able to upgrade my vehicles over the years with ease.

From my first grant in 1991 to my most recent application under the new Advancing Uniform Transportation Opportunities (AUTO) for Veterans Act, working with VA has been great.   I was stationed at Ft. Huachuca in Sierra Vista, AZ in 1990 where I was shot on duty as a Military Police Investigator, then moved to the Phoenix area after rehab where I’ve lived ever since.   When I started working with United Access in 2018, their knowledge and assistance with Veterans, paperwork, grants, etc. made everything seamless.   I remember trading in my 11-year-old VMI Dodge Grand Caravan for a BraunAbility Toyota in 2018, and it was truly a game-changer.  The added power and reliability of the Toyota van have made my life so much easier, especially with the brake hold function which saves me a lot of energy.

Most recently, when I learned about the AUTO Act grant opportunity, I immediately reached out to United Access. Working with Christina was seamless, and she confirmed that I could indeed use the proceeds of my trade-in along with the new auto grant. The process was smooth, and I was even able to receive a check from United Access to help with my vehicle upgrade.

I cannot stress enough the importance of applying for the grant as soon as possible. Even if you are not ready to make a change in your vehicle, having approval in hand allows you to plan for when you are ready. The grant was a great help, and the whole process was a breeze thanks to United Access and their team.

I highly recommend United Access to any veteran in need of accessible vehicles and support. Their commitment to helping veterans like me is truly commendable, and I am grateful for their exceptional service. Thank you, United Access, for all that you do!”

2021 PVA Corporate Patriot Award

In May 2021, the Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) announced United Access and the Karyn and Richard May Foundation as the recipients of the 2021 PVA Corporate Patriot Award.

The PVA Corporate Patriot Award recognizes a donor’s significant contribution toward furthering the goals and mission of PVA and its chapters/regions through financial support and resource commitment over the past five years. United Access was nominated by the ST. Louis PVA Gateway Chapter.

“United Access and the Karyn and Richard May Foundation’s generosity have significantly enhanced our ability to carry out our mission to support deserving veterans with spinal cord injuries or diseases,” said Stanley D. Brown, national director and president, PVA Gateway Chapter. “Their support has enabled us to provide grants for accessible vehicles and housing, as well as sponsor recreational events that help veterans live life to the fullest.”

United Access has supported various PVA events and programs, from golf tournaments to the St. Louis VA Local Wheelchair Games, for the past 20 years. Additionally, in 2017 the newly formed Karyn and Richard May Foundation made a gift of $20,000 to the PVA Gateway Chapter.
