Does Medicare Cover Stairlifts?

Did you know that nearly 64 million Americans have Medicare coverage? When you're covered by Medicare, there are times that questions may come up.

If your medicare questions include whether or not Medicare will cover a stairlift, this article is for you. Keep reading and learn everything you need to know about Medicare coverage and stairlift funding.

Does Medicare Cover the Cost of a New Stairlift?

The simple answer to this question is no. However, the reason is that a stairlift gets considered a home modification and isn't considered durable medical equipment.

If you're older or a person with a disability, at times, a stairlift can provide the freedom you need to move about your home. The cost of a stairlift can be daunting when it's not covered by insurance.

So how do you get funding?

How to Pay for Stairlifts

While Medicare does not pay for stairlifts, funding options are available. If you need to buy a stairlift and can't afford the cost, consider some of the funding options listed below.

Medicare Advantage

Some Medicare Advantage programs will cover all or part of the cost of stairlifts. Since Medicare Advantage plans get offered by private companies that are Medicare-approved, the provider does have the ability to offer additional coverage.

If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, you can contact your provider to find out more about whether they will cover a stairlift.

Consumer Financing a Stairlift

Some companies that sell stairlifts may offer financing programs. These programs will allow you to pay off your stairlift over a predetermined amount of time.

Medicaid

Medicaid offers waivers in some states to help elderly individuals or individuals with disabilities continue living at home. These waivers can help to cover the cost of items like stairlifts.

If you live in a state that offers Medicaid waivers, you can apply for one.

Veterans Benefits

If you're a veteran, you may be able to get the cost of a stairlift covered through the VA Aid and Attendance benefits. To qualify for this, you must be eligible for a pension.

There are several ways you can apply for this program. You can apply by filling out the correct forms and sending them to your pension management center.

You are also able to apply in person.

Rent to Own a Stairlift

There are some stairlift companies that provide rent-to-own programs. You can make monthly payments that help pay down the cost utilizing this type of program.

Other Options

Other options available include other state grants or state-based home modification programs. You can also consider a home improvement loan to pay for your stairlift.

You will want to check with the state and county you live in and ask about grants that might be available to individuals with disabilities or elderly individuals.

Area Agency on Aging

Check-in with your local area agency on aging. Often they will know the grants and programs available in your area.

They can help you find local resources that will work for you and help you maintain independence at home.
