Driving Disability Inclusion in the Workplace

Perhaps no place is more critical to foster disability inclusion than the workforce. After all, being independent is dependent on having the financial means to live your life on your terms. Plus, what better way to expose others to the abilities of people with disabilities than to have them as a valuable member of a workplace.

But according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, people with disabilities are still twice as likely to be unemployed than the rest of the population.

Fortunately, most companies and organizations are finally beginning to realize the importance of having a diverse workforce inclusive of race, gender, ethnicity and disability to represent the many faces of the consumer world. Diversity and Inclusion programs are becoming standard in corporations, and since Covid-19, many are realizing it’s possible (and in some cases more efficient and economical) to allow the work-from-home flexibility people with disabilities have requested for decades.

BraunAbility’s Drive for Inclusion program extends to disability employment opportunities, both within our walls and beyond. We’ve established a mentorship program devoted to mentees with disabilities, and individuals with disabilities are a part of every recruitment effort. We’re also gathering feedback and advice from those who have faced their own battles with employment discrimination. Together we can push toward a new normal of workplaces that break through the old and tired stereotypes of the employability of people with disabilities.

BraunAbility hosts a discussion with disability employment advocates Ben Trockman and Madeline Delp about how there's never been a better time to hire or be hired from the disability community.
