With the newest version of the Honda Odyssey now available, wheelchair accessibility specialists Braun Corporation have stepped up to the plate with its latest conversion. Braun promises more independence than ever before with its minivan conversion, stating users can either drive from their wheelchairs or ride along as a front or rear passenger. The conversion is comprehensive, including all requisite components like an automatic sliding door with self-deploying ramp, a lowered floor (up to 10 inches lower) for loading ease, and Braun-designed side strakes. An auto kneel feature uses an electric actuator to further compress the rear suspension in order to flatten the ramp's rake. Removable seating, wheelchair tie-downs, and an integrated keyfob make minivan ownership simpler for wheelchair users.

Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A., Inc. and the Braun Corporation today announced the donation of a 2011 Toyota Sienna with a BraunAbility Rampvan® XT wheelchair van conversion to the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Guardian Angels Foundation. As part of his grand prize package from last year's Toyota Sponsafier 2 contest, Jeff Hallowell of Maize, Kansas will use the Rampvan on behalf of the organization.

Nick Gutwein, president of The Braun Corporation, a Winamac, Indiana, maker of wheelchair lifts for minivans and buses, said his business has been growing steadily outside the U.S., with foreign sales now accounting for about 10% of total sales. A weaker dollar "is a big driver," he said, adding that most of the closely held firm's exports go to Western Europe. "There's a catch-up occurring in Europe, as well as in Latin America, with legislation requiring buses to be wheelchair-accessible." Braun's exports are up nearly 17% this year.

This year has brought me an unexpected opportunity to temporarily enter the world that people with disabilities experience every day. In two weeks, I will have my fourth surgery, a second knee replacement. I am now the bionic woman, and I also have a new found understanding of disability challenges.

Twenty years after the Americans with Disabilities Act was signed into law, people with physical disabilities are still having difficulty getting jobs.
According to a recent study conducted by the Kessler Foundation/National Organization on Disability, 21 percent of disabled working-age Americans had a job in the past year compared to 59 percent of those without physical disabilities.

With these accessible vehicles, wheelchair users have the option to ride as passengers or, if able, to drive the van. According to Census data, there are approximately 4.3 million wheelchair users in the nation, including veterans, seniors, adults, and children with disabilities. “Mobility is not a luxury; it’s a necessary component to an independent life,” said Nick Gutwein, Braun’s president.
